Effective research on global issues
Getting to the heart of science issues with a global dimension can be a complicated exercise. Almost always there are many factors and several perspectives to consider, which makes for dynamic and interesting classroom discussions.
The most successful discussions are those where pupils develop understanding and empathy, and maybe even change their behaviour, if appropriate. These successful discussions are underpinned by sound research.
When carefully planned and managed effectively, the internet is a useful research tool. Remember, however, that the least useful, effective and enjoyable ways of learning science may also be through internet research (Cerini, B. et al.2003), so present this type of research activity little, not often.
Look at developing web-based research questions for your pupils now in the Activity on the right.

Activity
This activity presents some statements and examples for you to develop your own web-based research questions and web-links for your pupils.
- Click on the Text icon above to see statements from 'Science: the Global Dimension KS3 and KS4'.
- A web-based research example on global warming, with a science emphasis, is provided from Painsley RC High School, Cheadle, through the website below. Click on the 'A and AS' button and scroll down to 'Global Warming Web Enquiry'. Staffordshire Learning Net for Geography
- Now try to provide your own research questions for pupils. Make sure they are designed to:
- show the science explanations and the evidence behind these explanations;
- bring out the different viewpoints of individuals or organisations;
- illustrate impacts on different cultures and societies;
- explore possible positive actions people might take.
