Activity

In this activity you will evaluate an 'off-the-shelf' KS4 science curriculum activity in terms of its effectiveness for teaching and learning about the global dimension.

  1. Choose an activity.
    • Click on the Text icon above and select 'GCSE assessment objectives'. Choose one of the assessment objectives that you would like one of your KS4 classes to cover.
    • Click on the Text icon above and scan the three activities there. Identify the one that you judge will best help your pupils to tackle your chosen assessment objective.
      The three activities are:
      • 'Speedy sperm' from Science UPD8.
      • 'Chemistry in our lives' from Science Across the World.
      • 'Satellite communications' from Global Perspectives in Science by Fiona Scott, pp. 53-6.
    • Plan a lesson that incorporates your chosen activity. In your plan, include both curriculum objectives and global dimension criteria from the list you compiled in response to part 3 of the Activity on page 2 of this unit. Also, consider how you will judge the extent to which these objectives and criteria are met as a result of doing the activity.
  2. Deliver the activity in a lesson and evaluate its success.
    • Deliver the lesson. If possible, ask a colleague to observe it and evaluate it against the curriculum objectives and global dimension criteria in your lesson plan.
    • After the lesson, evaluate the success of the activity - how effectively were the objectives and criteria met?
    • If you are satisfied that the activity meets the objectives and criteria sufficiently, consider including it in the appropriate scheme of work.
