Unit 4

SOFT analysis

Read the text below (left) before carrying out the activity.

Confident informed citizens

Global issues such as 'fair trade' and 'clean clothes' are concepts that many pupils will have some familiarity with, but perhaps a patchy understanding of what they mean in reality.

Click on the Text icon and read the '10 actions that any citizen can take' (Regan (ed), 2002, p. 271; based on Coates in Roddick, 2001).

Many of these actions demand pupils to be confident, informed citizens. To facilitate this, pupils must be secure in voicing their views and opinions, and ensure that these are substantiated. The activity on the right is one that you can do with your pupils, to give them confidence in speaking about global issues. It involves carrying out a SOFT (strengths, opportunities, failures and threats) analysis.

  2. Click on the Text icon and read the 'SOFT activity'. Also print out sufficient copies of the 'Writing frame' for your pupils to complete.
  3. Plan how you will introduce this activity to your pupils; for example, you may like to bring in some fair trade products. Note that this activity may stretch over more than one lesson.
