Developing a sense of place
The global dimension is multi-sensory. It is a complex element of geographical education and, as such, demands a variety of teaching and learning strategies to be employed. One way to explore this is to consider how individuals develop their sense of place. Personal perspectives are often our starting point for deepening our understanding of places and their global interconnections.

Activity
- Think of a place that you have a strong association with.
- Make some notes describing the nature of your association under each of the points below:
- sense of identity;
- sense of belonging;
- understanding of others in a place;
- personal benefits from places.
- Click on the Text icon and print out the 'Effects wheel' (adapted from Lambert and Balderstone, 2000, p. 377). For one or two of the points above, use the effects wheel to help you explain how your association with the place you have described in your notes has developed.
- Plan to use the effects wheel with your pupils, for example in a starter or plenary activity when finding out about a distant locality. By considering their own perceptions and perspectives pupils will be encouraged to think about the source of the partial evidence that they are using to explore a more distant locality.
