Unit 5

Using level descriptors

Read the text below (left) before carrying out the activity.

Formal assessment

How can level descriptors be developed for assessing pupils' progression towards becoming a global citizen? This will be explored in the activity on the right, by looking at existing attempts to create 'levels' for the global dimension and by drawing on level descriptors in geography.

Activity

  1. As preparation for the activity itself, do the following.
    • Click on the Text icon and print off and read the 'Level descriptors' from Learning from Experience: world studies in the primary curriculum (Steiner, 1993, pp. 32-3).
    • Go to the National Curriculum Online website. Click on 'Geography' in the list on the left-hand side. Under the heading 'View the National Curriculum', click on 'KS1 or 'KS2'. Now click on 'Attainment targets'. Print out and read the information provided. National Curriculum Online
    • Look at your printouts of the Oxfam curriculum for global citizenship (from the first activity in this unit). If necessary, go to the 'Cool Planet' section of the Oxfam website again for this information. Click on the link 'Global citizenship' and then click on 'Oxfam's curriculum for global citizenship'. Scroll down the screen, click on 'Curriculum for global citizenship' again, and then select the age group(s) you require.Oxfam
  2. Use the texts above, as well as statements from the other references in this unit, to draft a set of level descriptors for levels 1-4 which identify how a pupil might 'progress' towards becoming a 'global citizen'.
  3. Consider how this could be a useful staff INSET activity. For example, perhaps it could be completed in groups looking at different levels, according to the age groups taught. Statements or level descriptors for each level could then be compared between the groups and a final definitive list could be established. Following the development and agreement of these level descriptors, you could discuss with colleagues the implications for school policies and teaching practice in your school.
