Looking for specific web-based materials
The Global Dimension web site contains a database of materials that are reviewed and recommended for teachers who want to bring a global perspective into their teaching. The database is updated monthly and includes materials published by commercial publishers and non-governmental organisations, as well as organisations which specialise in development or global citizenship education. All resources on the database have been reviewed by teachers with expertise in that specific subject.
The main criteria for inclusion are that resources should:
- fulfil specific curriculum requirements;
- focus on education, not campaigning;
- provide information and data that is accurate, current and verifiable;
- reflect accurately the broad range of informed opinion on a subject;
- help pupils explore values, and develop responsible attitudes towards their fellow citizens and the environment, from local to global level;
- help pupils develop the knowledge, skills and competencies which will enable them to be more effective in bringing about change.
The activity on the right involves carrying out a more detailed search for suitable resources for teaching the global dimension. Look at this now.

Go to the Global Dimension web site. From the drop-down menus beneath 'Search of resources', click on 'Teaching resources'. Scroll down and click on 'Advanced search'. Use the database to find five suitable resources - paper or electronic - for teaching the topic of water as a cross-curricular global theme. For example, select your preferred country and key stage; then enter 'geography' for your preferred subject area; and then put 'water' for your key word search. Global Dimension In considering your choice of resources, reflect upon what you have studied in this unit, in particular:
- the criteria for the Global dimension website resources;
- the existing resources and artefacts available to your school;
- the 'Do and don't checklist';
- the 'Bias alert form';
- the relevance of the resources to currently topical local or global issues.
Present your five resource ideas to other teachers. Use the feedback they give to decide whether or not to propose incorporating the resources into teaching programmes in your school.
