Unit 4

Evaluating web-based resources

Read the text below (left) before carrying out the activity.

ICT and the global dimension

ICT provides new and exciting opportunities for increasing global awareness. Through using ICT pupils can:

  • carry out research on important social, economic and environmental issues;
  • learn about different cultures and places;
  • exchange and share information, including with people from other cultures and countries;
  • discover the issues that are important to people of other cultures and countries, and learn how they are coping with or addressing these issues;
  • begin to appreciate common issues and problems for people throughout the world, and join networks of concerned people across the globe;
  • learn about and become involved in world-wide campaigns.
  • contact and influence people, businesses, institutions or governments that can bring about change.

As with all resources, but particularly with the internet, it is important that teachers and pupils are aware of the variable quality of resources on offer and are able to recognise sites containing biased and inaccurate information.

The activity on the right provides opportunities for you and your colleagues to take a critical look at web sites so that you can help your pupils use the internet more effectively.

Part 2

Carry out an internet search using either the 'Google' or 'Ask Jeeves' search engine to find sites relating to global citizenship education. Google Ask Jeeves

Apply the 'Tips for using the internet to research citizenship issues' to the websites that are prompted by the search. Select five suitable websites to recommend to teachers. The sites should, between them, contain information, resources and activities on the teaching of the global dimension. Discuss your thoughts and evaluations of the sites you selected with your colleagues.
