An alternative strategy for evaluating resources

With the wide range of books, photo packs and other resources available for teaching and learning about the global dimension in mind, look now at the activity on the right. This will enable you to consider critically which resources you would choose in order to present a positive, accurate and all-round representation of people and places. This activity provides a framework for examining resources for bringing the global dimension into the curriculum. It is suitable for staff INSET sessions.

Activity

  1. Click on the Text icon and print out sufficient copies of the 'Do and don't checklist', from Global Citizenship: the handbook for primary teaching (Young and Commins, 2002, p. 21), for each group. Then consider these questions.
    • What do you think of the checklist?
    • Would you like to add more points to the checklist?
  2. In groups, choose one point raised in the 'do' column and suggest a resource, artefact, activity, display, assembly theme or school policy that addresses this point.
  3. Share your group results.
