Global society, global curriculum
Increasingly, the lives of both adults and children are linked with the lives of others all over the world. Exploring, discussing and understanding these historical, geographical, economic, political and social links is a vital part of every pupil's education and preparation for becoming an active global citizen in the twenty-first century.
In the National Curriculum for England 2000, for example, it is made clear that the school curriculum should: 'promote equal opportunities ... challenge discrimination and stereotyping' (DfEE/QCA, 1999).
It should 'develop [pupils'] awareness and understanding of, and respect for, the environments in which they live, and secure their commitment to sustainable development at a personal, local, national and global level' (ibid.). It also calls for 'understanding of the spiritual, moral, social and cultural heritages of Britain's diverse society and of the local, national, European, Commonwealth and global dimensions of their lives' (ibid.). Therefore, in order to meet the requirements of the National Curriculum international and global matters must necessarily inform the curriculum content.
Incorporating the global dimension into the curriculum also provides opportunities for teachers to examine values, combat prejudice and develop pupils' open-mindedness. It can build on pupils' knowledge and interest in the world and improve their understanding of the increasing global interdependence which shapes our modern lives.
Now complete the activity on the right. This will help to reveal in a fun and engaging way the extensive links with the wider world that already exist in the classroom. Try it out with a group of pupils.
