Unit 3

Identify people in your community

Read the text below (left) before carrying out the activity.

Focus on your community

The global connections of parents and the local community are part of the school community's social capital. The global dimension provides opportunities for the involvement of the local community in activities such as 'international days', assemblies and classroom discussions. The activity on the right provides an auditing tool to help you identify people in your community who could be involved in bringing the global dimension into your school.

Activity

  1. Make a list of all the people in your community who could contribute to promoting the global dimension in your school, such as parents and other family members, local business people, charity workers, public services personnel, police officers, and members of organisations such as faith groups.
  2. Share this list with colleagues and ask them if they can identify others.
  3. Think of ways to involve these people in bringing the global dimension into your school, and keep notes of your ideas.
  4. Action point: keep your list and notes for reference for two purposes:
    • when completing other units;
    • when formulating your whole-school policy on the global dimension.
