Unit 3

Development of global citizenship characteristics

Read the text below (left) before carrying out the activity.

Focus on managing and teaching the curriculum

Consider these eight global citizenship characteristics:

  • looking at problems in a global context;
  • working co-operatively and responsibly;
  • accepting cultural differences;
  • thinking in a critical and systemic way;
  • solving conflicts non-violently;
  • changing lifestyles to protect the environment;
  • defending human rights;
  • participating in politics.

(Cogan and Derricott, 2000,
quoted in Sterling, 2001, p. 75)

The activity on the right provides an auditing tool which enables you to track the degree to which the management strategy, teaching strategy, curriculum content and resources in your school encourage the development of these characteristics at the present time.

Activity

  1. Click on the Text icon and print out the 'Citizenship table', which sets the eight global citizenship characteristics mentioned opposite against management strategy, teaching strategy, curriculum content and teaching resources.
  2. Use this table to identify areas of policy or practice in your school that may need challenging or adapting to address each characteristic. Place a tick in the appropriate column to indicate how well each area operates in your school:
    • 1 = very well;
    • 2 = to a moderate degree;
    • 3 = not at all.
  3. Keep the completed table for future reference, especially when you complete Unit C5.
  4. Action points: draw up a list of what needs to be done to develop the citizenship characteristics in your school, based on the results recorded in the table.
