Unit 6

Tourism: do we want the new hotel?

Read the text below (left) before carrying out the activity.

Interest groups

The activity on the right enables pupils to become aware of the fact that different groups, including different media, will often present very different viewpoints and perspectives on the same issue, and that these viewpoints are often based on the different interests of each group. The activity can help pupils develop critical thinking skills, enabling them to begin to detect bias, assess different viewpoints and select evidence from the information that the media expose them to.

Now look at the activity opposite. This classroom activity enables pupils to consider the advantages and disadvantages of tourism in a developing country and to explore the different viewpoints and conflicting interests of different groups.
